After graduating with a B.Sc. in Marine Biology from McGill University, Yves Prairie completed his Ph.D.
in limnology at the same institution under J. Kalff in 1987. He then pursued limnological studies at
the University of Constance (Germany) as a post-doctoral fellow. In 1988, he returned to Montreal as
assistant Professor at UQÀM. From 2000 to 2008, he was Director of GRIL, a large interuniversity research
center in limnology currently composed of 25 faculty members. He was chair of the organizing committee
of the SIL 2007 congress that was held in Montreal in August 2007.
Currently on sabbatical leave in Italy at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Pallanza
